Dr. Rodrigo Aguilera completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1991 and M.S. in Organic Chemistry in 1992 at the University of Lyon, France. He obtained his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry & Physical Chemistry field at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Claude Bernard Lyon I, France. At the CNRS he worked for 5 years in the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory- Chemistry & Biology Department to develop a new approach for the detection of performance-enhancing drugs used by professional athletes by measuring the Carbon Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS). He was then employed in 1997 at the Olympic Analytical Laboratory headed by Dr. Don Catlin in the Department of Medical and Molecular Pharmacology School of Medicine at UCLA. By using the IRMS detection method that he developed while in France, Dr. Aguilera became an authority in this field, and is the pioneer with Dr. M.Becchi in the application of IRMS to identify the use of exogenous testosterone. He was responsible for the drug testing analysis by IRMS at the Atlanta Summer Olympics Games 1996, Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Games 2002 and the Pan American Games 2007 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as well as at other sporting events. Since joining the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory in Psychiatry Department, School of Medicine at UCLA Dr. Aguilera expanded his experience to the field of Proteomics for future anti-doping applications. In 2003 Dr. Aguilera helped to establish and direct the University of Southern California Proteomics Core Facility Laboratory dedicated to cancer research, biomarkers and metabolomics studies. From 2007-2008 Dr. Aguilera joined Applied Biosystems as Team Leader in the Proteomics, Clinical and Toxicology applications. Dr. Aguilera represented the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) with the Floyd Landis Tour de France doping case. Since 2009 Dr. Aguilera has served as an external expert reviewer for research proposals in the anti-doping field for different National and International Organizations.
In 2011 Dr. Aguilera joined the Voluntary Antidoping Association (VADA) in Las Vegas, Nevada as a Scientific Director.
